Poles are more in favour of autonomous shops than unmanned cars

Poles are quite sceptical about artificial intelligence - these are the conclusions of the "Mobile Portrait of a Pole" survey commissioned by Bank Millennium. Although almost 40 percent of respondents would decide to shop in an autonomous store (without a salesperson), only 16 percent would decide to ride in an unmanned autonomous car. Nearly 70 percent of the survey participants had never used chat GPT or other language models.

In the "Mobile Portrait of a Pole" survey, respondents answered questions related to the development of artificial intelligence (AI). 95 percent of respondents admitted that they had come across this term, but 35 percent of them did not fully understand what it meant.

The survey also shows that 67 percent of respondents have never "had a conversation" with chat GPT or others, one in four respondents has tried a maximum of a few times, and only 10 percent use such tools regularly. Nearly 70 percent of respondents have never used chatbots and voice bots serving customers of various companies, and 80 percent have never used artificial intelligence tools to help them at work (only 8 percent use such tools regularly).

When asked about the areas in which they feel the impact of artificial intelligence on their lives, respondents point to the media (44 percent), shopping (33 percent), entertainment (29 percent), administration and official affairs (24 percent), as well as finance (20 percent).

- The results of the survey show the complex attitude of Poles towards artificial intelligence – there are many concerns and potential benefits of its use. It is worth noting that these beliefs are very often built without actual interaction with AI. That is why education about it is so important nowadays. Only then can doubts about the loss of control and privacy be balanced by understanding the benefits of synergies between AI and human abilities. In this way, we can build a future in which AI will become a useful tool supporting our everyday lives — comments Łukasz Bezulski, Head of the Artificial Intelligence Team in the Customer Intelligence Department at Bank Millennium.

The "Mobile Portrait of a Pole" also examined the appetite of Poles for innovations related to the use of artificial intelligence. Although 39 percent of respondents would go shopping in an autonomous store, only one in three respondents would install a smart home system in their house or apartment - this technology enables automation and remote control of various systems in the home, e.g. lighting, air conditioning, security systems, household appliances using a smartphone, tablet or computer.

Even fewer respondents, only one in five, would decide to handle banking matters in an autonomous branch (without consultants), 17 percent of respondents would take part in a training with a trainer generated by AI, 16 percent would get into an unmanned autonomous car, and only 6 percent would invest a larger amount of money according to a recommendation prepared by AI. As many as 36 percent of respondents would not decide on any of these options.

The survey shows that the Poles it covered have a lot of concerns about artificial intelligence. 38 percent of respondents believe that AI will do as much good as bad. Almost every third respondent has a more pessimistic picture and believes that the development of artificial intelligence will do more harm than good, and every fifth respondent is of the opposite opinion. 17 percent of respondents have no opinion on the impact of AI on everyday life.

The three most frequently reported concerns by respondents about the large-scale use of artificial intelligence are: the loss of control over AI by humans (indicated by 58 percent of respondents), the exposure of society to manipulation and disinformation (this view is shared by 57 percent of respondents), as well as privacy violations (54 percent of responses). Respondents are also concerned that AI will be used for military purposes (46 percent) and are concerned about reduction of the number of available jobs (42 percent). On the other hand, when asked about the benefits associated with the development of AI, they point to progress in medicine (50 percent), streamlining work and automation of routine tasks (40 percent) and improving the quality of life (39 percent).

The survey participants were also asked who should regulate legal issues related to the development and application of artificial intelligence. According to 52 percent of the respondents, these competences should be given to the governments of individual countries, and according to 41 percent - to international organisations. Almost every third respondent believes that supervision should be exercised by technology companies themselves, and almost every fifth - by non-governmental organisations. Only 3 percent of respondents do not want any supervision over the development of artificial intelligence, and 23 percent have no opinion on this issue.

The "Mobile Portrait of a Pole" survey was carried out on 25-29 October 2024 by the Ogólnopolski Panel Badawczy Ariadna research panel commissioned by the Bank Millennium Public Relations team on a representative sample of 1068 people using the CAWI method.
