You can restrict your PESEL number

If you are over the age of 18, you can restrict your PESEL number and thank to it limit the consequences of identity theft. This will ensure that no one can use your PESEL number without your knowledge, for example to take a loan using your details.

You can reserve your PESEL number:

  • in the governmental application mObywatel
  • on the obywatel.gov.pl website
  • in person at the town or municipal office

How your personal details and money are protected

From 1 June 2024, we check whether your PESEL number is restricted.

This means that if your PESEL is restricted and someone wants to use illegally your personal details in our bank - we will prevent this from happening.

We will verify that your PESEL is secured when:

  • opening personal, savings and currency accounts (including an account for a child)
  • applying and concluding agreements for credit products: cash loan, consolidation loan, overdraft, credit card, mortgage loan
  • requesting an amendment to the agreement resulting in an increase in debt or the available limit on credit products
  • applying for contractual credit holidays or changing the repayment date of credit products
  • registering for the BLIK Płacę Później - BNPL service
  • withdraw cash at a branch (when the amount exceeds three times the minimum wage)

You can temporarily withdraw the restriction

If your PESEL is restricted and you want to use our products, e.g. take out a loan - you can temporarily cancel the restriction. You can do this in the mObywatel app or on the obywatel.gov.pllink opens in a new window.

 

FAQ

  • Yes. In this way you can limit the consequences of identity theft. The fraudster will not use the restricted data, e.g. to take a loan, buy electronic devices with installment loan, sell property or duplicate a SIM card, which can then be used to authorise transactions made by the thief at a financial institution.

  • Every adult Polish citizen or foreigner with a PESEL number.

  • You can reserve your PESEL:

    • in the mObywatel mobile app
    • at obywatel.gov.pl
    • in a city/municipality office
    • in a bank which offers such a service
  • We will verify that your PESEL is secured when:

    • opening personal, savings and currency accounts (including an account for a child)
    • applying and concluding agreements for credit products: cash loan, consolidation loan, overdraft, credit card, mortgage loan
    • requesting an amendment to the agreement resulting in an increase in debt or the available limit on credit products
    • applying for contractual credit holidays or changing the repayment date of credit products
    • registering for the BLIK Płacę Później - BNPL service
    • withdraw cash at a branch (when the amount exceeds three times the minimum wage)
  • We check the status of your PESEL number at the register during processes that legally require such verification.

    If the verification concerns a product with more than one owner, we check the PESEL numbers of all co-owners and co-borrowers.

  • If you start the process and you have a restricted PESEL number, you will see a message that you cannot use the product because your PESEL number is restricted.

    This will only happen with products where we have a statutory obligation to check your PESEL number.

    Then, in order to use our services, you can temporarily withdraw the restriction.

    You can do this:

    • in the mObywatel mobile app
    • at obywatel.gov.pl
    • in a city/municipality office

    The withdrawal of a reservation is active immediately, which means that you can immediately apply for a loan or account, for example.

    The situation is different for cash withdrawals.

  • If you wish to withdraw cash in excess of the daily limit of three times the minimum wage at branches in one day, your PESEL number cannot be restricted. Withdrawals ordered on the same day, regardless of which branch, count towards the limit.

    When your PESEL number is restricted, we will block withdrawals from your accounts that exceed the limit for 12 hours.

    The daily limit as at 1 June 2024 is PLN 12,726 and will increase to PLN 12,900 from 1 July 2024.

    If you wish to withdraw a smaller amount at a branch, you do not need to do anything.

    The limit (three times the minimum wage) does not apply to cash withdrawals at ATMs or transfers.

  • No. The daily limit also includes withdrawals in foreign currencies. This means that your PESEL number cannot be restricted if:

    • you want to withdraw cash in a foreign currency above the limit,
    • the cash withdrawal in foreign currency exceeds the limit when we add it up with other withdrawals from all your accounts on this day (in PLN and other currencies).

    For this limit, we exchange foreign currencies at the average exchange rate of the National Bank of Poland.

    The daily limit is three times the minimum wage - we have described the details in the question above.

  • In the case of representatives, at the time of withdrawal we check the PESEL of the account owner (or co-owner) on whose behalf the proxy is acting.

  • Yes, but you can only restrict it again 30 minutes after canceling the previous restriction.

    When you cancel the restriction, you can also immediately specify the exact date and time when the system will automatically block your PESEL again.

  • Yes. You can check all queries that relate to your PESEL, for example in the mObywatel app. There you will see which institution has sent a query to the database and why.

  • You can check the status of your PESEL number, for example in the mObywatel app.

  • The verification applies to individual customers who have been assigned a PESEL number and are at least 18 years old, from 1 June 2024.

  • On 1 June 2024, on app versions older than 4.92, we disabled all processes where we are required to verify PESEL. This means that anyone who does not update the app will not be able to use these processes.

    On 15 June 2024, we will disable access to older versions of the app (below 4.92).
